Prevention, intervention and cure

We strongly believe that our relationship with the community is not an optional add-on, but the source of the trust on which our business is built.

Our business is about prevention, intervention and cure, which in turn makes us a source of information, security and wellbeing in our communities.

State Driver Reviver

For some travellers, stopping for a free coffee and a sizzling sausage can be the highlight of a road trip – or a lifesaver. These travellers have discovered State Driver Reviver – a series of marquee-based hospitality events that take place during holiday periods on some of the country’s busiest stretches of roads.

This year we had 6,586 visitors to nine events over Labour Weekend 2007 and Easter 2008.

State Driver Reviver has the support of the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) that says around 14% of all fatal crashes involve driver fatigue which in 2007 accounted for almost 60 road deaths. The only truly effective survival technique is to stop, revive, and then drive.

Bad bumpers bump up repair costs

There are times we feel we owe it to New Zealanders to tell them what we know so they’re in a position to make informed choices.

Bumper designs on cars have a big impact on the amount of damage caused in low speed collisions. When we tested 10 of New Zealand’s top-selling small and medium-sized vehicles, we found repair costs ranging from around $1,200 to $10,000 for frontal repair and $1,600 to $3,800 for rear repair.

State’s national sales and support manager Mike Tully says State’s testing programme was designed to assist car manufacturers in helping to keep the cost of collision repairs affordable.

“We encourage motorists to consider the cost of repairing a vehicle before they make their purchase decision. A bargain in the showroom may not be such a good deal when taking into account the cost of insurance and repairs.”

Cure Kids’ Great Adventure Race

For a second year at Christmas, instead of giving gifts to business partners we donated $20,000 to Cure Kids, the face of the Child Health Research Foundation.

As part of the donation we entered two teams in the Cure Kids’ annual North and South Island Adventure Races.

On 1 March 2008, the South Island team of Isaia Piho, Rachelle Brightwell, Mark Knight and Aaron Cook raced in Queenstown, while on 4 April 2008 the North Island team of Nick Hawkins, Annette Purvis, Phil Hibbert and Mike Kensington took on the Waitakeres’ challenge.

The Race is no easy challenge

Taking up to 10 hours to complete, teams navigate courses which take them off-road, down tracks, through rivers and wetlands, up hills and across mountainous terrain.

Weather conditions were significantly harsher for the Queenstown team but both teams had a fantastic time. The Auckland team came second, which was a brilliant effort and together the teams raised an additional $6,000 for this important charity.

Paralympics New Zealand

State is a proud sponsor of Paralympics New Zealand, the national organisation that provides athletes and coaches access to international competitions, such as the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games and IPC World Championships.

Paralympics New Zealand supports and encourages opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sports, at regional, national and international levels. Sports are offered through a network of Regional ParaFed Associations, national disabled and able-bodied sports organisations, clubs, coaches and individuals.

We’re delighted to be backing an organisation that promotes healthy lifestyles as well as personal and team success.

Rewarding learning relationships

Students from low-decile schools and communities face significant barriers to participating and achieving in higher-school and tertiary education.

In addition to financial barriers, they lack tertiary-qualified role models, academic and career aspirations, and an awareness of academic and career opportunities.

The First Foundation brings together businesses, individuals, schools and students to remove these barriers for New Zealand’s most talented but financially disadvantaged students.

We are one of these businesses. Through this programme we give a First Foundation scholar financial assistance over four years of tertiary education, a variety of work experiences, access to a mentor and a structured support and development programme.
